Milic Stankovic, an academic painter from Belgrade, born in Macva, one of the most distinguished painters in contemporary Serbian painting, made a gift to Krusevac in 2000 containing a legacy of more than 120 paintings depicting Serbian history, from Stefan Nemanja to modern era, with accent on Kosovo Battle in 1389 and medieval Krusevac.
The original idea of the greatest Serbian historical painter was to place a legacy next Gracanica in Kosovo, in a specially built tower, but since the circumstances made it impossible, he chose Krusevac as it was a symbol of Kosovo in his mind. Presenting a gift to Krusevac, Milic requested one thing – permanent exhibition had to be placed in a building looking at the Lazarica Church and that is why a structure in a vicinity of an archaeological park “Prince Lazar’s Town”, in Car Lazar Street, was chosen for the gallery.
